Russian police arrest more than 1,000 people for going out to protest against the war in Ukraine

At least 1,000 people were arrested this Sunday for participating in protests in several towns in Russia against military intervention in Ukraineindicated the NGO OVD-Info, specialized in following demonstrations.

According to the source, more than 10,000 protesters have been arrested in Russia since February 24 when the military operations began.

Despite intimidation by the authorities and the threat of prison sentences, protest actions – limited – have been taking place every day for more than a week in different cities of the country.

Russian opponent Alexei Navalny – who is in prison – urged Russians to take to the streets every day to ask for peace, despite intimidation from the authorities.

On Sunday the first arrests took place in the far east of the country and in Siberiadue to jet lag.

According to OVD-Info, more than 200 people were arrested in the cities of Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg.

There are also actions underway in Moscow, where the police are deployed in the center. The NGO in defense of human rights Memorial indicated that one of its members Oleg Orlov was arrested in the square in front of the Kremlin.

In the north, one of the central squares of St. Petersburg was surrounded by police who were arresting people.
