At least 27 people died on Wednesday evening in a bus accident on the island of Java (Indonesia). The vehicle, which was carrying 66 people, was traveling at night on a winding, poorly lit road when it fell into a 20m ravine.

The victims are adults, children and the driver. The bus was carrying pilgrims, among whom were many college students. They were returning to the city of Subang after a religious pilgrimage to the west of the island.

Frequent road accidents

Rescuers were busy all night to extract the survivors from the bus using cranes. Relief and local authorities report 39 survivors according to the latest report. An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of this accident.

Accidents of this kind are frequent on the roads of the Indonesian archipelago. The dilapidation of vehicles and infrastructure is the cause, as well as a flagrant lack of respect for the Highway Code by drivers. At the end of 2019, at least 35 people had been killed when their bus fell into a ravine on the island of Sumatra.
