Putin calls for foreign fighters to fight in Ukraine with Russian troops

The Russia from Vladimir Putin deployed more than 190,000 soldiers to the borders of Ukraine before initiating the invasion of that country, on February 24.

Now it seems he needs backup.

  • “Syria was the school of war for Russia to later invade Ukraine”
  • The “children” of the USSR who are now escaping Russian attacks in Ukraine
  • Irina Karamanos, the feminist leader and partner of Gabriel Boric who promises to reformulate the role of the first lady in Chile

The Russian president made a call this Friday to allow the incorporation of foreign volunteers to fight against the Ukrainian forces.

At a meeting of the Russian Security Council, Putin said that those who wanted to voluntarily fight alongside his country’s forces should be welcomed.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said there were 16,000 volunteers in the Middle East ready to fight alongside Russian troops.

US officials noted that among these could be Syrians trained in urban combat.

Moscow is an important ally of Syria and Putin has been a key supporter of President Bashar al-Assad during the country’s decade-long civil war.

“If you see that there are these people who want to come to help the people living in Donbas of their own free will, not for money, then we must give them what they want and help them get to the conflict zone,” Putin told his minister. defense.

Shoigu also proposed handing over captured Western anti-tank missile systems to Russian-backed rebel fighters in Ukraine’s breakaway Lugansk and Donetsk regions.

“Please do that,” Putin replied.

“International Legion”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, responding in a video message, said that “thugs from Syria” would come to kill people “in a foreign land”.

Foreign fighters, including former members of the British military, have also been arriving in Ukraine to fight for the government in Kiev.

Zelensky recently said that 16,000 foreigners had volunteered for the cause, referring to them as the “international legion”.

Charles Lister, analyst at Middle East Institutebased in the United States, questioned how useful the Syrian forces would be to Putin.

“If the regime [del presidente] Asad begins to send troops to Ukraine, they will be nothing more than cannon fodder in a war and in an environment that is completely alien to them“, he wrote on Twitter.

He added that there has been no evidence that any actual recruitment of Syrians has occurred.

The televised meeting of the Russian Security Council came as Russian forces in Ukraine began attacking new targets in different areas of the country.
