China records its first coronavirus deaths in more than a year

The health authorities of China reported Saturday of two deaths from COVID-19the first deaths recorded by the Asian nation since January 2021, at a time when the country is fighting a wave of omicrons.

The deaths, both in the northeastern province of Jilin, bring the country’s death toll from coronavirus to 4,638.

China on Saturday reported 2,157 new cases of COVID-19 by community transmission, mostly in Jilin. The province has instituted travel restrictions, and people need permission from the police to cross the borders.

China had recorded 4,636 deaths since the pandemic began in the central city of Wuhan at the end of 2019. In April 2020 it revised its death toll once, adding new deaths that were not initially counted, as the pandemic overwhelmed hospitals and other city systems.
