Up to six million children trapped in Ukraine face a “imminent danger” as the number of attacks by Russian troops against hospitals and schools increases in the country, according to Save The Children.

In a report released today, the organization indicates that urban areas in Ukraine have been bombed repeatedly, reducing the streets to rubble and warns that at least 464 schools and 43 hospitals have been damaged.

Relentless shelling has forced at least one in five Ukrainian children – more than 1.5 million – to leave the country and almost six million children remain in Ukraine, many of them sheltered inside buildings under attack, leaving them vulnerable, injured or dead, as well as deprived of food, clean water and health care.

In the report, Save the Children stresses that the damage caused to essential services such as schools and hospitals will increase if the fighting continues, especially in populated areas.

It also points out that there are currently more than 300 health facilities in areas with active fighting or a significant troop presence and another 600 facilities are located within ten kilometers of the hostilities.

“Up to 6 million children in Ukraine they continue to face grave danger after almost a month of war. We are extremely alarmed that bombs and intense attacks have damaged more than 460 schools in the country, and more than 60 are now in complete ruin.”says Pete Walsh, Ukraine director for Save the Children.

The manager regrets that the streets of Ukraine “They are being used as a battlefield” and that at least 59 children have been killed in the escalation of violenceaccording to UNalthough this figure could reach up to a hundred.

“The rules of war are very clear: children are not a target, nor are hospitals and schools. We must protect children in Ukraine at all costs.”he remarks.
