The most intense earthquake occurred at 1:41 local time (17:41 GMT on Tuesday) and slightly exceeded magnitude 6 on the local scale (maximum of 7) and 6.5 on the Richter scale.

The lower scale 6 earthquakes of the system used on the island mean that people have difficulty staying upright during the tremor and that windows or parts of some buildings can break off and fall.

According to CNA, in the most affected localities there have been breaks in some pipes and water tanks in residential areas.

In addition, a road in Changbin has been cut by falling rocks and an 88-year-old man was injured by the impact of pieces of glass falling from a building.

TSMC, the world’s largest maker of semiconductors for international brands, reported that some of its machines in its factories were affected by the tremor, although it assured that its workers have returned to the production line.

“Aftershocks are not ruled out in the next three days,” Chen Guochang, director of the Earthquake Prediction Center of the Taiwan Central Bureau of Meteorology (OCMT), explained to local media.

According to Chen, the cause of the earthquake was the collision between the Philippine and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Taiwan sits at the confluence of both plates, so earthquakes in its territory are frequent.
