Zelensky also called on Qatar to increase its natural gas production to counter Russian efforts to use energy as a threat, during a meeting of political and business leaders organized in Doha.

“They are boasting that they can destroy with their nuclear weapons not only a particular country but the whole world,” Zelensky said in a live video more than a month after the start of the invasion launched by Russia against his country.

The president indicated that when Ukraine dismantled its arsenal in the 1990s, it received security guarantees from the most powerful countries in the world, including Russia, according to the translation of his speech.

“But this did not turn into guarantees and in fact one of the countries that was supposed to deliver one of the biggest security promises started to act against Ukraine and this is the ultimate manifestation of injustice,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky asked Qatar, which is one of the three largest producers of natural gas, to increase the flow due to the conflict.

“The future of Europe depends on your efforts,” he told an audience that included Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

European countries have promised to move away from their dependence on Russian oil and gas and have already turned to Qatar to seek alternative suppliers.

Germany has promised to build two huge terminals to receive liquefied gas from Qatar, the Gulf country said after a visit by emissaries from Berlin.
