They vandalized the statues of Néstor and Cristina Kirchner in Río Gallegos

Two weeks ago, in the hometown of Nestor Kirchner, an unprecedented stage in Argentine politics was inaugurated: in the same space, the sculptures of the seven presidents elected since the return of democracy were gathered. A few meters away, the figures of Néstor and Cristina Kirchner, Mauricio Macri, Alberto Fernández, Raúl Alfonsín, Fernando de la Rúa and Carlos Menem will coexist on the city’s coastal promenade. What political differences do not achieve, art saves. But the coexistence did not last long. Two weeks after its inauguration, the statues of Néstor and Cristina Kirchner were vandalized, as well as that of De la Rúa, on the Paseo de los Presidentes de la Democracia, located in the Plaza de la República.

The incident occurred today at dawn and security cameras were not needed to identify the perpetrator, sources from the municipality confirmed to La Nación. A passerby who witnessed the act of vandalism notified the police and minutes later the perpetrator was arrested at the scene. First thing in the morning, municipal authorities, promoters of the project, filed the complaint at the police station while they reported that the damaged sculptures will be repaired and put back in place.

The “Paseo de los Presidentes de la Democracia Argentina” was inaugurated by Mayor Pablo Grasso (FDT) on March 18 in the Plaza de la República, and is intended to be a tribute to democracy and recognition to those who dedicated their life to politics. The work promoted by Grasso sought to convert the capital of Santa Cruz into the first Argentine city to have a space to honor the presidents elected by popular vote since the return of democracy.

“Cristina Kirchner’s sculpture is the most vandalized, they took out her cane and hit her, while the sculptures of Néstor Kirchner and De la Rúa also suffered damage, but less,” Silvio Escobar, Director, explained to La Nación. Coordinator of Municipal Projects and one of the ideologues of the Paseo de los Presidentes de la Democracia Argentina. The official classified the event as “a political issue, because it was an attack on the president, they are not coincidences. If we concatenate the facts with what happened in his office and with what happened here, there may be a correlation in everything, ”considered the municipal official.

These incidents come just in a week in which the vice president was also the axis of posters with insults and accusations in the streets of Buenos Aires. That action – which was repudiated by the most important figures of the Frente de Todos and even by President Alberto Fernández – occurred on Monday, when a series of banners appeared in which the former president was accused of 35,000 deaths, without foundation.
