Only tortilla and beans, this is how Bukele punishes the detained gang members “so that they learn to respect each life”

The government of the President of The Savior, Nayib Bukele, is determined to show, by any means, that the “exemplary” punishment that gang members who commit acts of violence will receive, in the midst of the state of emergency declared over the weekend. First, Bukele released a video showing half-naked prison gang members being taken out of their cells, while their mattresses were removed. Then, the director of prisons showed how their food has been reduced to a ration of beans with a tortilla.

“In the Security and Maximum Security prisons we limit food, the gang members are going to suffer from the pain that their gangs cause outside. homeboys (gang members). They will learn to respect the life of each person”, tweeted Osiris Luna Meza, Vice Minister of Justice and General Director of Penal Centers, in a message in which he ravished Bukele.

The tweet is accompanied by photos where you can see a plate with only a portion of beans and two tortillasand others where you see a prisoner, bare-chested, devouring the scant food.

“Not a single step back in the war against the gangs”, Luna Meza insisted.

“A bread with beans in the morning and a tortilla with beans in the afternoon, nothing more”, he tweeted later.

For their part, the Penal Centers (@PenalesSV) tweeted that “we proceeded to limit their food [a los detenidos] and we have verified that the one ingested by gang members is of lower quality, as ordered by the president.”

In another tweet, they noted that “All newly captured gang members entering the prisons will also receive limited food and will not even have mats to sleep on.. The state is respected”.

Bukele also released a video where a detainee complains about the reduction in food and that they They removed mats, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toilet paper, among others.

“This well-known gang member complains that they no longer give him chicken at lunch and that now they only give him beans with a tortilla.. It is unfair that Salvadorans buy beans to eat and that their murderers buy chicken from those taxes.”

The 28th of March, Bukele warned the gangs he accuses of the wave of homicides in the country: “Stop killing or they will pay too.”

This same Wednesday, Congress approved some reforms to the Penal Code so that being part of a gang constitutes a crime.
