Russia begins large-scale maneuvers of its Strategic Missile Forces, those with nuclear capabilities

The Strategic Missile Forces of Russia Large-scale maneuvers began today in the Orenburg region, in the south of the country, with the participation of 3,000 troops and 300 combat teams, in the context of the “special military operation” of the Russian Army in Ukraine.

“In the exercises of the missile unit of Yasnenskin the region of Orenburgmore than 3,000 soldiers and more than 300 combat teams participate”, reported the press department of the Ministry of Defense of Russia in a statement quoted by the Interfax agency.

The Strategic Missile Forces are one of the main components of the strategic nuclear forces of Russia and their purpose is the nuclear containment of a possible aggression against the country.

These forces have Yars missile complexes in their arsenal, capable of destroying targets 11,000 kilometers away, as well as Voyevoda, Stilet, Topol-M and the new Avangard missile systems.

The exercises, which are taking place some 1,500 kilometers east of the border with Ukrainewill be led by the senior leadership of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces and the Central Military District of the Russian Armed Forces.

The first regiment of Avangard strategic missileswhich have a hypersonic cruise warhead capable of developing a speed of up to 27 Mach (27 times the speed of sound), integrated into the Russian Defense system since December 2019.

“In correspondence with the Strategic Missile Forces preparation plan for 2022, the commission of the command of these troops carries out a comprehensive inspection of the missile unit of Orenburg”, the Russian Defense Ministry noted.

During the exercises, evasion maneuvers of attacked units, response to modern and advanced air means and alert systems in case of an attack with this type of weapons will be practiced.

“The main objective of the exercises is to perfect the teamwork of the military leadership bodies, assess the practical preparation of the command and the officers of the missile unit (…) and the combat, organizational and general supply capacity ” of the troops”, added the ministry.

On February 27, three days after the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the forces of containment Russians in “special service regime” after “aggressive statements” by the main NATO countries, which condemned the military operation initiated by the Kremlin.

The Russian president gave these instructions in a meeting with the Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigú, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Valeri Gerasimov.
