Paraguay lifts the health emergency due to coronavirus and eliminates the mandatory use of the mask

The government of Paraguay lifted this Monday the health emergency in force since March 2020 due to the pandemic of coronaviruswhich put an end to the mandatory use of the mask due to the decrease in infections and deaths from the virus.

The decision was announced at a press conference by the head of the Civil Cabinet, Hernán Huttemann, and the Minister of Health, Julio Borba, after a meeting held by several members of the Executive with the Paraguayan president, Mario Abdo Benítez.

Specific, The Executive repealed decree 3456 of March 16, 2020, through which it declared a health emergency situation as a result of covid-19.

Huttemann explained that, from now on, The law that established the mandatory use of the mask “is without effect”whose validity depended on the continuity of the health emergency.

However, he clarified that the Ministry of Health may recommend wearing a face mask at “certain times.”

On the other hand, The requirement for entry into the country of the vaccination certificate or a PCR test for those not vaccinated is maintained.

After the measure announced today, it will not be required to wear a face covering in shops, private establishments, restaurants, schools, universities, as well as in social, sports and religious worship events, among others.

The head of the Civil Cabinet clarified, however, that the law declaring an economic emergency approved to alleviate the effects of the pandemic will remain in force until next June.

Explaining the reasons for the cessation of the health emergency, Borba indicated that Paraguay “is in a favorable epidemiological situation”, according to the evaluation of the last ten weeks.

The official pointed out that positive cases and deaths are “below average”, compared to the year 2021.

In that context, He highlighted that less than 250 infections were registered during the last week.

The Ministry of Health clarified that it will maintain the recommendation to use face masks “preventively and in specific situations.”

The “essential use” of masks will be requested in public and private health services, in nursing homes and for people with respiratory symptoms, explained the general director of Health Surveillance, Guillermo Sequera.

It is also “highly recommended” to wear this garment on public transport and in closed spaces that are poorly ventilated and crowded, added the official.
