El Salvador registers 6 consecutive days without homicides, according to President Nayib Bukele

The Saviorwhich has been in an extension regime since the end of March due to the violence attributed to gangs, registers six consecutive days without homicides, while the arrests of alleged gang members exceed 20,000 until this Thursday, according to the president Nayib Bukele.

The president indicated, through a publication on Twitter, that on Wednesday there were no homicides in the country and that six consecutive days “with 0 homicides” have already been added.

Besides, pointed out that arrests during the emergency regime exceed 20,000.

However, neither the president nor the security authorities have detailed how many of the detained people are gang members, to which gang they belong and how many are accused of having links with said structures.

Despite recording no murders, The Savior It has been in a state of emergency since March 27, a measure whose first 30 days ended on Wednesday but which continues due to an extension approved by the Legislative Assembly last Sunday.

The Constitution of The Savior It requires that in order to extend an exceptional regime – whose maximum period must be 30 days – it is necessary that the same circumstances that originated it be maintained, in this case the wave of murders.

The government of Bukele admitted in his request for expansion, sent to Congress, that the escalation of murders was controlled, but that the number of gang members released could endanger “the progress made.”

The state of exception was extended without the deputies having asked the Government for a detailed report on the results of the measure and without applying measures to deal with complaints of abuse.

Mass arrests have been the main bet of the Bukele Executive during the emergency regime, but so far it is unknown if the Government is working on a plan that proposes measures for a substantive solution to said phenomenon.

The first 30 days of said regime have also been marked by complaints on social networks of arbitrary arrests and calls from national and international organizations to address alleged abuses and human rights violations committed during this period.

The Bukele Executive launched the Territorial Control Plan (PCT) in 2019 to cut off the sources of financing for the gangs and retake the areas controlled by these gangs, mostly neighborhoods and populous neighborhoods.

However, the population in general is unaware of an official document that details the way to deal with the gang phenomenon from the State.

The gangs, a phenomenon considered a legacy of the civil war and which was strengthened by the deportation of gang members from the United States, have more than 70,000 members and have resisted the security plans implemented in the last four administrations.
