China registers 32 deaths from coronavirus in Shanghai and 865 new cases

The National Health Commission of China today announced the death of covid-19 on the eve of 32 people in the eastern metropolis of Shanghai, bringing the total death toll since the epidemic began in China to 5,092.

The city, which has been under strict confinement for a month – in some areas, more than a month and a half – has added a total of 454 deaths since the end of February.

Chinawhich applies a strict policy of “zero tolerance” before the covidis going through a wave of outbreaks attributed to the omicron variant that is causing record numbers of infections not seen since the start of the pandemic in the first half of 2020.

Thus, the Commission today reported 865 new positive cases of the coronavirus detected the day before, 846 of them due to local contagion and the rest imported.

The areas with the highest number of cases of community transmission were Shanghai (727) and beijing (36).

Health authorities also reported today the detection of 6,957 asymptomatic cases, 6,895 of them local (the majority in Shanghai), although they are not counted as confirmed cases unless they show symptoms.

The remaining infections, found among travelers from abroad, were detected in various regions of the country.

The total number of active infected in the China continental amounts to 20,173, 576 of them in serious condition.

According to the institution’s accounts, since the start of the pandemic, more than 217,000 people have been infected in the country and 5,092 have died.

To date, almost 3.5 million close contacts with those infected have been medically monitored, of which some 474,000 remain under quarantine.
