Families ask to dedicate a historic roundabout in Mexico City to the disappeared

Symbolically, the groups planted photographs of their missing relatives on the land where the palm tree was, removed on April 25 after occupying the space for almost 100 years.

“Today the roundabout of the disappeared is born, as a symbol of the constant absence that is lived in thousands of homes”, family members expressed in a statement read by several activists.

“It is a space that will function as a device that aims not only to be a reminder of the thousands of people that the State has not wanted to search for, but that it will become a space that the families of disappeared people and the rest of society can use. for the memories to last”they added.

As the collectives pointed out, the “Roundabout of the disappeared would be added to thememory path” in which citizen associations have placed anti-monuments in the capital to demand justice for cases such as that of the 43 disappeared students from Ayotzinapa and the femicides.

Since April 25, the Government of Mexico City opened a public consultation, via the web, to decide which tree is going to replace the historic palm tree on Paseo de la Reforma, but has not confirmed whether the site will change its name.
