Ukraine: 44 bodies found under the rubble of a destroyed building in Izium in March

The bodies of 44 civilians were found Tuesday in the rubble of a building destroyed in March in Izium, a city controlled by Russia in the Kharkov region, in the east of Ukrainesaid the Ukrainian authorities.

“Forty-four civilian bodies were found in Izium (…) in the rubble of a destroyed five-story building during the first ten days of March” by Russiasaid in Telegram the governor of the Kharkov region, Oleg Sinegubov.

The governor, quoted by the Ukrainian media, added that the inhabitants of the city remove the rubble “when there is no shelling” in an area that is still the scene of fighting.

Sinegubov did not specify under what conditions the bodies were collected or who found them. Izium and its surroundings are occupied by Russian troops who took the city on April 1, after several weeks of intense fighting.

The Kharkov region prosecutor’s office announced, for its part, that it had opened an investigation for “violation” of the rules governing war and “premeditated murder”, and specified that 14 bodies had already been identified.

According to the investigation, in the period from March 7 to 10, 2022, the Russian army systematically shelled the city of Izium,” the statement from the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office said.
