Modern American artillery enters combat in Ukraine and could change the course of the war

Fighting continues across large swathes of eastern and southern Ukraine, with many battles being long-range artillery clashes between the Russian and Ukrainian armies.

Washington and Europe have poured billions of dollars into weapons to help Ukraine defend itself against an invading Russian army better equipped than its own.

“On behalf of the men who now use the M777, I would say that it is like going from a steam train to an electric car,” Captain Dmytro Pletenchuk, of the military administration of Mykolaiv (south), told AFP on Monday night.

“These systems are now used by the Ukrainian armed forces with great success,” he added without revealing where they are.

“Our enemies are very affected by this,” he said, adding that artillery fire is exchanged in the region “every day and every night.”
