George Soros: “The Russian invasion may have been the beginning of World War III”

Billionaire George Soros said Tuesday that the Russian invasion of Ukraine may have been the start of Third World warso the best way to preserve a free civilization was for the West to defeat the forces of the president Vladimir Putin.

Soros91, a renowned hedge fund manager who gained fame betting against the British pound in 1992, it situated the Ukraine war as part of a broader struggle between open societies and closed societies, such as China and Russia, which were on the rise.

“The invasion may have been the start of World War III and our civilization may not survive it,” said Soros in Davosaccording to a text of his speech released by his office.

He added: “The best and perhaps only way to preserve our civilization is defeat putin as soon as possible. that’s the gist”.

Besides, Soros pointed out that the European Union should understand that Putin could shut down Russian natural gaswhich currently represents about 40% of Europe’s needs. “I can’t predict the result, but Ukraine certainly has a fighting chance.”he added.

The billionaire rated Russiathe largest country in the world by area, and China, the world’s second largest economy, as the main members of a group of ascending “closed societies” in which the individual is subservient to the State.

Echoing US President Joe Biden who has said that the West is engaged in a battle with autocratic governments, Soros also added some pessimism. “Repressive regimes are now on the rise and open societies are under siege”he pointed SorosAnd followed: “Today, China and Russia present the greatest threat to the open society.”
