Texas student arrested for having guns and ammunition in his vehicle

A student from a school in Brownsville (Texas) was arrested this Thursday after a weapon and ammunition were found in his vehicle, reported school authorities, who are under alert after the Uvalde shooting.

The student was detained at Veterans Memorial Early College High School, after a routine search of the young man’s vehicle in which a weapon and several boxes of ammunition were found on Thursday morning.

School authorities have been conducting routine searches of students and their vehicles, and that led to the finding, the Brownsville Independent School District said in a statement.

They added that after the arrest of the young man “the authorities indicated that there is no threat to the campus, students or staff.”

The young man was taken into the custody of the Brownsville Police and Security Services Department and will face charges, school officials said.

The arrest takes place just as the funerals of the 19 children and 2 teachers killed on May 24 by the shooting of an 18-year-old boy at a school in Uvalde (Texas), where the aggressor was later shot by the Police.

The massacre carried out by Salvador Ramos has triggered criticism of the Police of Uvalde for the delay in taking action against the shooter.

In that sense, state senator Roland Gutiérrez said today at a press conference that the pleas for help from people inside Robb Elementary did not reach the school district’s Police Chief, Pete Arredondo.

The Democratic senator described as a “system failure” that the calls went to the city police, but were not communicated to Arredondo, who has been questioned for not making the decision to shoot Ramos.

Steven McCraw, chief of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), said last week that police did not rush into the classroom where the gunman was hiding faster because Arredondo believed the situation had changed. from an active firefight to a hostage situation.
