A spectacular concert of music and color, which brought together figures such as the Queen group, Rod Stewart or Andrea Bocelli and in which Elizabeth II herself took part, paid tribute this Saturday to the British head of state for her 70 years of service.
The concert started with the broadcast on the giant screens installed in the place of a funny performance by Elizabeth II, in which she was seen having tea with the character Paddington Bear, to whom she told him that she likes jam sandwiches and she was even seen taking out two slices of bread from her inseparable black bag.
Look: Between the pomp and the thanks: what does Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee mean for the British?
Living up to her well-known sense of humor and celebration, the 96-year-old queen even beat the start of the event by banging her tea saucer with a spoon to mimic the sound of “We will rock you.” of Queen.
Elizabeth II was followed by guitarist Brian May, who set the crowd ablaze with “We will rock you”, followed by “We are the champions”, as the assembled and members of the royal family in attendance waved british flags.
Due to her mobility problems, Elizabeth II has not been able to attend many of the celebrations, but she was represented by her eldest son and heir to the crown, Prince Charles, who took the stage to thank his mother for 70 years of service .
“The scope of tonight’s celebration, and the warmth and affection throughout this Jubilee weekend, is our way of saying thank you, thank you from your family, from the country, from the British Commonwealth of Nations.”added the prince.
“You promised to serve your whole life and you continue to do so. That is why we are here. That is what we celebrate tonight”, added the Prince of Wales, while images of different aspects of the life of Elizabeth II were reflected on the palace.
In this show, in which there was music, dance and speeches, figures such as Rod Stewart, Andrea Bocelli, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stefflon Don, George Ezra or Elton John performed.
An energetic Rod Stewart, in pinstripe trousers and a yellow jacket, roused the crowd with his song “Baby Jane”, before he had them sing along to “Sweet Caroline”, a favorite of English football fans.
The Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli sang Nessum dorma, in honor of the British sportsmen, some of whom were shown on the giant screens placed in the place.
The Duran Duran group was also present, with music and a show of color reflected on the palace’s facade while several models paraded on stage in wide yellow and red dresses and some young people danced to the rhythm of the songs.
Prince William, grandson of Elizabeth II, joined the celebration by highlighting the work of environmentalists and calling for a collective effort to save planet Earth.
In a brief speech, the Duke of Cambridge highlighted the work of figures such as the naturalist David Attenborough, as well as the campaign of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, and his father, Prince Charles, to preserve green spaces.
The duke, second in line to the throne, said that climate change is currently the priority of governments around the world and admitted to being, like his grandmother, optimistic that planet Earth could be saved from its current “fragility”.
“If we harness the best of humanity and restore our planet, we will protect it for our children, for our grandchildren and for future generations to come,” the prince said.
Before his intervention, images of elephants, lions, as well as the jungle were reflected in front of the palace, while the so-called “tree of trees” was also illuminated, a giant tree installed in front of the royal residence, representing the thousands of trees that the British have planted this year in honor of Elizabeth II.
