Bolivian government says that sentence against Áñez is “historical precedent”

The government of louis arce partially celebrated this Friday the sentence of 10 years in prison for Jeanine Añez considering that a “historical precedent” was set, although he also anticipated that it is just the beginning of the proceedings against the former interim president, who will also prosecute for the deaths during the 2019 crisis.

“Today history was made. Mrs. Jeanine Añez was sentenced to 10 years in the Golpe II case for self-proclamation and the violation of the rules of constitutional succession in our country in 2019 in the Coup d’etat,” the Minister of Government (Interior) wrote on his social networks. ), Eduardo del Castillo.

“This precedent must serve so that never, for any reason, a person calls himself president of the country,” concluded Del Castillo, whose office was one of the accusers in the “coup d’état II” case.

The Ministry of Justice stated in a statement that “a decisive phase has been completed in the process of recovering democracy” and defended that the Judicial body “in the exercise of its independence issued a sentence” framed in “the principles and guarantees of the due process”.

“The sentence for the Coup II case is a historical precedent so that a coup d’état will not be repeated after the rupture of the constitutional order. It establishes before history that the democratic and constitutional path is the only route to reach power”, indicates the note.

For that institution, the ruling “proves all the violations incurred by Mrs. Añez in her capacity as senator, by proclaiming herself president of the State.”

“The memory of our martyrs is partially honored today. This is a first step on the road to comprehensive reparation and will only end when those responsible for the massacres, summary executions and all the human rights violations committed during the 2019 coup movement are brought to justice,” he added.

In addition, he insisted that the process was framed in the laws and assured that international organizations such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights verified that the human rights and “jurisdictional guarantees” of the former president were respected.

The ministry recalled that the full content of the sentence must be known within a maximum period of three business days, as indicated by the regulations.

For this reason, “it is not appropriate for the moment to make further comments about that decision,” the statement says, although the head of Justice, Iván Lima, anticipated the private channel Bolivisión that they will appeal the ruling, since they asked for 15 years in prison for Áñez for this case.

For its part, the Mission in Bolivia of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (Oacnudh) said that in accordance with its mandate “it is carrying out an international observation on the judicial process against Jeanine Áñez and 8 other defendants. , accused of breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the Constitution and the laws”.

The agency recalled that this international observation was requested by the Ministry of Justice “and accepted by the parties and the Judicial Body” and that they will make their observations “once the sentence has been issued and read in its entirety”, which is expected. It happens on June 15.

Áñez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the law when she assumed power in 2019 in the midst of the post-election crisis that for the Government of Luis Arce and the ruling party was a “coup d’état” against Evo Morales .
