UK records another 50 cases of monkeypox

Health authorities reported Friday another 50 cases of monkeypox throughout Britainbringing the total to 574, the largest outbreak outside of Africa to date.

In a statement, Britain’s Health Security Agency said most cases have been identified in gay or bisexual men, but warned that anyone who comes into close physical contact with someone who has monkeypox is at risk of contracting the disease. .

“If you have a blistering rash, or any other symptom of monkeypox, don’t go to events, meet friends or have sexual contact,” warned Dr William Welfare of Britain’s Health Security Agency. He said people who may have been exposed to the disease should stay home and call health services for guidance.

The World Health Organization has said that people with monkeypox could be infectious for up to four weeks, and advises that they isolate themselves until they have fully recovered.

Globally, more than 30 countries that do not typically have monkeypox cases have reported 1,880 infections, with 85% of cases occurring in Europe. No deaths have been reported.

Until last month, monkeypox had only caused major outbreaks in central and western Africa. More than 1,500 cases and 72 presumed deaths have been reported on that continent in a separate epidemic.

This week, World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the continued spread of monkeypox in countries that had not previously had the disease “unusual and worrying.”

He said he would convene a meeting of experts next Thursday to decide whether the spread of the monkeypox outbreak warrants a declaration of a global emergency. This would give it the same designation as the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing efforts to eradicate polio.
