Why is Father’s Day celebrated?

The origin of this celebration dates back to 1909, when Sonora Smart Doddthe daughter of a veteran of the American civil war, wanted to pay tribute to her father for having raised his 6 children alone with great dedication, after her mother passed away.

That year, after hearing a speech for Mother’s Day, which was already being celebrated in the United States, Sonora proposed to commemorate all fathers on their father’s birthday, June 5.

Although the idea did not prosper at first, in 1924 the president of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, supported the idea of ​​making this national day; but it wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson finally declared the third Sunday in June the Father’s day in that country.

When is Father’s Day celebrated in Latin America?

A large part of the Latin American countries celebrate the Father’s day the third Sunday in June. As well as Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico and Venezuela also commemorate on this date.

Bolivia, for its part, celebrates its parents on March 19, commemorating the day of San José.

Brazil, on the other hand, chose the second Sunday of August as the day to celebrate dads.

Some countries in America, Europe, Asia and Africa decided to celebrate parents on the third Sunday of June. This group includes the United States, Aruba, Barbados, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, India, Vietnam, Japan, Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya.

For their part, Andorra, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Liechtenstein, Honduras, Italy, Mozambique, Switzerland and Portugal celebrate Father’s Day on March 19.

In South Korea, the celebration takes place on May 8.

Every first Sunday in September, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji celebrate Father’s Day.
