Dom Phillips (left) and Bruno Araújo Pereira disappeared on June 5 in the Brazilian Amazon.

Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, the first suspect arrested, admitted to burying the bodies of Philips Y Pereirashot to death, according to investigators.

Both had been last seen on June 5when they embarked for Atalaia do Norte (northwest), in the Javarí Valley, an area known for its danger due to the activity of drug traffickers, illegal fishing and gold mining.

According to police authorities, at this stage of the investigation The evidence suggests “that the murderers acted alone (…) without a criminal organization behind the murders.”

The Union of Indigenous Peoples of the Javarí Valley (Univaja), whose members actively participated in the investigation, refuted the version.

Representatives of Univaja plan to meet this week in Brasilia with members of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil -the highest court- and of the Constitution and Justice Commission of the Parliament, to “pressure the authorities so that the Federal Police play its role in investigation” of the double murder, he said in a note.

According to the organization, for which Pereira worked to help indigenous people guard their territory against intrusions by gold miners and illegal fishermen, “a powerful criminal organization (…) planned the crime down to the smallest detail.”

Several experts point out that the illegal fishing of endangered species in the Javarí Valley is largely controlled by drug traffickers who use the business to launder money from drug sales.
