Chinese President Warns Against ‘Expanding Military Alliances’

Xi said at the business forum of the bloc of BRICS that the “crisis of Ukraine is…a wake-up call” and warned against “expanding military alliances and seeking one’s own security at the expense of other countries’ security,” according to state media.

The Chinese president also criticized the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Russia, assuring that “sanctions are a boomerang and a double-edged sword.”

The BRICS bloc of emerging economies, formed in 2009, groups 40% of the global population and represents nearly a quarter of world GDP.

Three of its members – China, India and South Africa – have abstained from voting on a resolution to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

China and India have strong military ties to Russia and buy significant amounts of oil and gas.

A week ago, Xi expressed his support on issues of “sovereignty and security” in a call to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, prompting the United States to call on Beijing to avoid placing itself on the “wrong side of history.” .

South Africa, one of the few African countries with diplomatic influence outside the continent, has also refused to condemn Russia’s military action, to safeguard important economic ties.
