“For four months all our positions were under full fire — and I want to emphasize this — from all the weapons that the Russian army has,” Sergei Gaidai, the governor of the Lugansk region, said on social media.

“Hell is there,” he said, referring to the siege of Severodonetsk, which has been under heavy bombardment for weeks as the Russians tried to take over the city.

The governor affirmed that the Ukrainian army maintains its positions and that “it will resist as long as it takes”.

In recent days, Russian troops have advanced south of Severodonetsk and have approached the twin town of Lysychansk, on the other side of the Donets River.

Gaidai said Moscow forces are trying to “encircle” Lysychansk, but the town is still under kyiv’s control.

“Lysychansk is being heavily bombarded with heavy weapons,” he added, noting that the city suffered “colossal destruction.”

The governor said that they are still evacuating Lysychansk, but in Severodonetsk the hundreds of civilians who sought refuge in the Azot chemical plant cannot leave due to the fighting.

“An evacuation is possible if there is an agreement at the highest level, if there is a ceasefire and a clearly demarcated route,” Gaidai said.
