After a drunken evening, he loses a USB key containing information on his entire city

He will surely remember this evening for a long time. While off for a few drinks after work, an employee of a company responsible for providing tax benefits to tax-exempt households in Japan simply fell asleep on the street. At the time, he was holding a thumb drive that contained the personal information of everyone in town, reports Capital.

“We will strive to regain the trust of our residents”

But when he woke up, it was gone. Problem: the key contained not only the names, dates of birth and addresses of 465,177 people but also tax details, names and bank account numbers. Not to mention information on households receiving public assistance. Fortunately, the local authorities insisted that the data contained on this USB key was encrypted and protected by a password, indicates CNN.

“We deeply regret having damaged public confidence in the administration of the city,” the municipality said after being alerted to the incident. “Security management when processing electronic data will continue to be ensured. We will strive to regain the trust of our residents by educating them about the importance of protecting personal information,” she added. So far, no leak of this data has been identified.
