At Least Nine Dead in Demonstrations Against Sudan’s Military Government

At least nine people were killed on Thursday during the crackdown on massive demonstrations against the military government in Khartoum, the capital of Sudanas reported by a group of pro-democracy doctors.

Security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades to try to disperse tens of thousands of protesters, according to AFP journalists at the scene.

Nine demonstrators were killed by the security forces, and at least seven of them -including a minor- died “by bullets” fired “in the chest” or “in the head,” reported a pro-democracy doctors union, which denounced that the security forces stormed and fired tear gas grenades at hospitals in the capital.

Already on Wednesday night, when small gatherings were formed in which the population was urged to go out to protest on Thursday, a young protester was hit by “a bullet in the chest” in Khartoum, the doctors said.

Sudan, one of the poorest states in the world located in East Africa, is experiencing a wave of protests against the coup by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on October 25, 2021.

After the coup, Sudan was suspended from the African Union and stopped receiving international aid, which is why the country continues to sink deeper and deeper into an economic crisis.

The coup ended the presence of civilians in power, a condition that had been stipulated during the negotiations for the transition to democracy launched in 2019 after 30 years of Omar al Bashir’s dictatorship.

Al Bashir was overthrown in April 2019 by the army after a massive protest movement.

“The people want the fall of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan,” protesters shouted Thursday. “Even if we all have to die, the military will not govern us,” chanted the crowd.

June 30 is a symbolic day for two reasons. On the one hand, it is the anniversary of the coup that brought dictator Al Bashir to power in 1989. On the other, it marks the beginning of the 2019 demonstrations that led the generals to integrate civilians into power after having overthrown the dictator.
