The convention that for a year has been drafting a new Constitution to Chili delivered its final text proposal on Monday in a historic ceremony attended by the country’s president, Gabriel Boric.
“Today this historic cycle of democratic work closes (…) This constitutional proposal, which we deliver today, is called to become the basis of the fairest country that we all dream of”, said the president of the constituent body, Maria Elisa Quinteros.

In the old building of National Congress where the convention worked for a year, in Santiago, the 154 conventional and special guests attended the official presentation of the proposal, which includes 178 pages, 388 articles and 57 transitory norms.
“This proposal gives us hope by allowing us to speak in the Constitution of dignity, inclusion and equality. Many people are excited by this possibility of living in a country with more social cohesion,” he assured. Quinteros.

Chileans will have two months from today to study the text, which declares to Chili a social state of law, and decide in a referendum on September 4 if they are satisfied with it or if they prefer to maintain the current Constitution, inherited from the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).
Despite the fact that the option of approving the new text in the exit referendum was the majority for months, in recent times there is no clear trend and some polls show a greater preference for rejecting it.
Creating a universal health system, strengthening public education, protecting the environment and enlarging the rights of indigenous peoples are some of the main themes of the proposal.
“We know that it can be perfected, and we hope it will be the minimum floor that contributes to consolidating a society with greater equity”recognized the president, who stamped her signature and handed a copy to President Boric.
The constituent process the first in the world with gender paritywas opened in October 2020, with the support of almost 80% of citizens in a historic plebiscite and after more than a year of massive protests for equality, which left thirty people dead and thousands injured.
