The head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, warned this Thursday to Russia that his troops would be “annihilated” by the West in case the Russian president, Vladimir Putinmake good on its threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
“Any nuclear attack on Ukraine will elicit a response”, said Borrell. “It will not be a nuclear response, but it will be so strong from a military point of view that the Russian army will be annihilated,” said the Spanish leader.

The diplomat then paraphrased Putin and said yes he “assures that he is not lying and that he cannot afford to brag now”, the Russian president must understand that “those who support Ukraine are not bragging either.”
Borrell made reference in those words to the European Union and its member states, the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

After annexation to Russia of four Ukrainian territories, Putin assured that to defend itself from any type of counterattack, his country would have the right to use all the resources at its disposal, in a clear reference to atomic weapons.
This was taken as a threat, so NATO Secretary General Jens Soltenberg said such a scenario would have “severe consequences”.
“There would be a strong response. It would almost certainly provoke a physical response from many allies, and possibly from NATO itself”, said a senior official of the military alliance on Wednesday.
Formally, NATO has not yet threatened to use its nuclear arsenal to respond to Russia, since Ukraine is not a member of the military alliance and therefore not covered by your self-defense clause.
