Magnitude 6.4 earthquake reported in Papua New Guinea

An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 shook the island of Papua New Guineawith no tsunami risk detected and, for the moment, the authorities have not reported possible victims or material damage.

The earthquake was recorded at 9:20 a.m. local time (23:20 GMT) and its epicenter was located 151 kilometers from the city of Kokopo, located about 800 kilometers from the capital Port Moresby, according to data from the United States Geological Survey, which measures seismic activity around the world.

The agency reported that the hypocenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 71 kilometers.

The island of New Guinea, whose western half belongs to Indonesia, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of ​​intense seismic and volcanic activity that registers nearly 7,000 tremors each year, most of them moderate.
