“Our candidacy has the fundamental objective of rebuilding this country and that reconstruction goes through an obsession that I have: the obsession to end hunger”declared Lula in a press conference granted in Recife, capital of Pernambuco (northeast), the state where the former president is from.

The majority of people living in extreme poverty are concentrated in the northeast of Brazil, a region where Lula received a higher percentage of votes than his rival, President Jair Bolsonaro.

The former president assured that his “second priority” is to generate jobs, for which he promised to start “a deep discussion” with businessmen about the generation of “more decent and stable jobs.”

Voting intention surveys place Lula as the favorite for the second round, which will be held in two weeks, with between five and nine points ahead.
