What lies behind the threat to Princess Amalia and what Dutch experts warn

The princess ameliateenage heiress to the Dutch throne, had to give up a normal student life in Amsterdam and resign herself to living in the royal palace with her parents, Guillermo and Máxima, in a new indication of the extent to which organized crime poses a threat to society. Dutch society.

Queen Máxima said that her daughter amelia can’t leave home” and what does that have “enormous consequences in his life”.

Visibly moved, Máxima, born in Argentina, said at the end of a visit to Sweden on Thursday that the 18-year-old princess no longer “lives in Amsterdam and practically cannot go out,” adding that, anyway, Amalia continues her studies.

Máxima’s comments reveal the concern in royalty and also reflect the fear felt by many people in the Netherlandsand in Europe in general, before the threat which represents the lucrative drug trade.

The threat to the princess “It was taken very seriously by the authorities”says Jelle van Buuren, an assistant professor specializing in security at Leiden University. “There are rumors that the threat would come from organized crime”although nothing official was disclosed, the expert added.

Last week, the local Ministry of Justice organized a meeting in which delegates from six nations committed to cooperate in the fight against organized crime. The meeting was arranged after Four individuals were arrested in the Netherlands on suspicion of planning to kidnap Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne.

The minister has become a possible target of organized crime for his reinforcement measures in the police fight against drug mafias, which have been involved in various violent incidents in the country in recent months.

In Belgium and the Netherlands there are ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam, respectively, two distribution centers for huge quantities of drugs in Europe.

Dutch prosecutors, on the other hand, added this week the charge of terrorism to the accusations that weigh on an individual suspected of having murdered popular journalist Peter R. de Vries last year.

They say the suspect posted a grisly video of de Vries after he was shot on an Amsterdam street on social media to make an even bigger splash.

That crime, along with that of a lawyer in 2019, are related by Justice to the drug trafficker Ridouan Taghiwith dual Moroccan and Dutch nationality, currently in prison.

The princess “is apparently the target of the ‘Mocro mafia'”Rick Evers, a journalist specializing in royalty, told the AFP agency. The “Mocro Maffia” are Moroccan mafia organizations specialized in drug trafficking to the Netherlands and Belgium.

“We’re talking about an 18-year-old who can’t lead a student life,” an “innocent girl,” Evers lamented. The journalist was present in front of the University of Amsterdam in September during the first day of classes for the princess, enrolled in the first year of a degree.

“When he arrived at the university we saw that there was a great increase in the number of security agents, both visible and invisible, with heavy weapons hidden in bags”, he narrated. A situation “abnormal” and “very unusual”Evers observed, since while members of the royal family are always accompanied by bodyguards, there are never that many.

The young heiress was already the target of threats on social networks, but this took on another dimension, Evers pointed out.. “Organized crime is a major problem in the Netherlands, which seems out of control”, said the journalist. But the dutch royal family certainly did not expectaccording to Evers, that amelia one day be part of the objectives.

According to the Dutch Minister of Justice, Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, organized crime “is literally and figuratively crossing all our borders” and he regretted that as soon as control is tightened in the port of Rotterdam, criminals move to Antwerp or Hamburg (Germany), or vice versa.

“In doing so, they threaten and intimidate everything they don’t like to further their illegal practices. Not only our guardians of the rule of law are affected, such as judges, prosecutors, police officers, journalists, mayors and ministers. Port employees, financially savvy individuals and citizens living in their residential areas also face violence and wrongful killings”, assures Yeşilgöz-Zegerius.

“You will not have a student life”

Amalia studies politics, psychology, law and economics at the University of Amsterdam and planned to settle on campus and live with other students in the heart of the city.

But he will have to continue living with his family in neighboring The Hague, according to his mother. “You will not have a student life”, Maxima lamented.

The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Ruttewho is also said to have beefed up his security measures amid threats, said what amelia it was one “terrible news”.

“I can’t say anything about the threats and the security measures,” he told reporters in The Hague. “I can assure you that all of us in the government are aware and are doing our best to ensure their safety.”

The newspaper By Telegraaf reported last month that security measures for Amalia and Rutte had been reinforced for fear that they would be targeted by criminal gangs. Police and the intelligence service declined to comment on the report.

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius said in a tweet that “security measures were taken around the princess”, but that he could not give details about “concrete threats or specific security measures”.

“It is terrible that this is necessary. Especially for the crown princess.”he stated.
