Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is “revolutionary”, according to Joe Biden

Congratulations flow. Joe Biden on Monday called the appointment of Rishi Sunak as the new British Prime Minister “revolutionary”, as he becomes the first non-white person to take up this post. “It’s quite amazing, it’s a revolutionary milestone and it matters,” said the American president during a ceremony at the White House for the Hindu holiday of Diwali.

Aged 42, Rishi Sunak, a wealthy ex-banker with a typical career path of the British elite, became Monday the youngest head of government in contemporary history of the United Kingdom, but also the first of Indian origin, his grandparents having lived in Punjab, a region of northern India, before the independence – in 1947 – of this country.

Upcoming interview

Joe Biden will meet with him “in the days to come”, the White House has also announced. “President Biden looks forward to meeting with (…) Mr. Sunak in the coming days,” said US executive spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday, adding that custom required await the reception of the new Prime Minister by King Charles III on Tuesday.

Rishi Sunak won after ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson quit and his opponent Penny Mordaunt failed to qualify, following a whirlwind campaign sparked by the resignation of Liz Truss, a victim after 44 days in office from the financial storm caused by his plans for unfunded tax cuts.
