Guterres calls for a “thorough investigation” into the incident in Poland

The general secretary of the UN, Anthony Guterres on Wednesday expressed concern about a missile explosion in eastern Polandin which two people have died, and called for a “thorough investigation” into the facts.

Guterres “is very concerned by reports of a missile explosion on Polish territory. It is absolutely essential to avoid an escalation of the war in Ukraine.”said the spokesman for the General Secretariat, Farhan Haq, in a brief statement.

The note adds that Guterres also “sends his condolences to the families of the victims” and wait “for a thorough investigation to be carried out” about the explosion, which occurred the day before in a Polish town near the border with Ukraine.

The explosion, which was attributed by Warsaw to a “Russian-made missile” but whose release has been denied by Moscow, has aroused international alarm and led to the convening of various meetings to analyze the incident, from the NATO until the G20.

Likewise, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and other world leaders of the G7 and NATO who are participating in the G20 summit in Bali have met emergency on the Indonesian island in order to discuss the incident in Poland.

At the meeting, the leaders agreed “unanimously” support Poland’s investigation to determine “exactly what happened” before giving “more steps” collectively, as detailed by Biden in statements to the press after the appointment.
