López Obrador asks the US to clarify the whereabouts of drug trafficker ‘La Barbie’

the mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador asked the United States this Wednesday to clarify the whereabouts of the imprisoned drug trafficker as soon as possible Edgar Valdez Villarreal, alias “La Barbie”, after a journalistic investigation that revealed that it does not appear registered in the US prison system.

“The United States government has to clarify it as soon as possible,” said the leftist president during his usual morning conference.

Valdez, a Mexican-American, was a high-ranking capo of the once powerful but now disbanded Beltrán Leyva cartel, captured by Mexico in 2010 and later extradited to the United States where he is serving a 49-year prison sentence.

According to a newspaper article released this week, “La Barbie”, 49, does not appear in the custody of the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, according to the agency’s website, which led the Mexican government to request a explanation to Washington.

“We want to know where he is and the consultation has been made and there is no precision on the subject, but we are going to continue asking that they inform us,” said López Obrador, who considered the case of Valdez “rare”.

The president considered that the drug trafficker does not have to leave prison because his sentence is “many years”, unless he has reached an agreement with the US authorities.

“If the agreement is given, we would still have to act if there are complaints [contra Valdez] in Mexico,” added López Obrador.

A spokesman for the US Federal Bureau of Prisons said that Valdez’s absence from their system could be due to the fact that he is undergoing medical treatment or attending court hearings, according to statements to the US network Univisión.

He added, however, that he could not provide information on an inmate not in his custody for security or privacy reasons.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday that US authorities informed him that “La Barbie” is still in their custody and serving his sentence, although he did not offer precise details about her whereabouts.
