San Francisco police defend use of so-called ‘killer robots’

Detectives in the Californian city, whose residents report an increase in crime, received authorization this week to use lethal machines.

Local authorities specified that if one of two senior officers of the San Francisco Police Department authorizes it, armed robots can go into action against suspects in violent situations such as shootings or suicide bombers.

“The use of robots in life-threatening situations is a last resort,” San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said Thursday.

“We live in times when unthinkable violence has become commonplace. We need to be able to save lives if we have these kinds of tragedies in our city.”

The San Francisco Police Department has several types of robots in its fleet. Managed remotely, they act “in situations with explosives, incidents with noxious materials and other types of events in which officers need to maintain a safe distance to control the situation”explained the instance.

The new city rules allow “the use of robots to launch an explosive charge in order to penetrate a structure where there is an armed or violent subject” and “incapacitate or disorient” whom do you represent “a risk or threat to life”.

“Robots equipped in this way would only be used to prevent the loss of innocent life.”
