Lula’s team accuses the Bolsonaro government of having “broke” the Brazilian economy

The transition team of the president-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvadenounced this Tuesday a “dramatic” financial situation in areas such as health and education, and accused the Government of Jair Bolsonaro of having “broken” the country.

“The Bolsonaro government bankrupt the Brazilian state. We are observing that there are essential services paralyzed or are at risk of being totally compromised ”said former minister Aloizio Mercadante at a press conference in Brasilia.

Mercadante, coordinator of the technical groups of the incoming Government of Lulawho will assume power on January 1, also criticized the fact that the foreign policy of the current Administration has transformed Brazil into a “outcast who owes 5,000 million” of reais (about 950 million dollars) to various international organizations.

Likewise, he mentioned that Brazilian officials have “seven years” without their wages being readjusted.

The former minister warned, however, that they will not have sufficient resources at their disposal to “reverse everything” what they are finding in the drawers of the outgoing Executive.

“We have to establish clear priorities, guarantee essential services and resume investment capacity to return to growing sustainably”he stated.

The current Minister of Education, Victor Godoy, acknowledged to Lula’s team that they do not have the resources to pay this month for the nearly 14,000 resident doctors and 100,000 postgraduate students who have benefited from scholarships.

According to Brazilian media, the Government of Bolsonarowho lost the elections on October 30 by a difference of less than two percentage points with respect to Lula, also fears that he will not be able to face some mandatory expenses this month, such as the payment of part of the pensions.

The Minister of the Presidency, Ciro Nogueira, recently consulted the Court of Accounts if it would be possible to request an extraordinary loan to meet those commitments, according to the newspaper Valor Económico.

“We have a dramatic situation in health, in education, in essential services… Our priority is to restore those services and care for the population,” insisted Mercadante.

In this context, he pointed out that the future Lula government will have to carry out tasks of “engineering” to solve those budget deficits “without increasing expenses”.

Along the same lines, the environmentalist leader Marina Silva, a key player in Lula’s campaign and a possible future Minister of the Environment, said in a forum on Tuesday that the transition team found itself with “scorched earth” in the environmental area.

“The budget was completely subtracted, the equipment dismantled and the surveillance institutions weakened,” denounced.
