The UN “condemns any attempt to subvert the democratic order” in Peru

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterrestoday condemned “any attempt to subvert the democratic order” in Peru after what happened yesterday, when the president Pedro Castillo declared a state of emergency in a failed movement that ended with his arrest.

Guterres expressed his “concern” about the political situation in the American country, and called “on the parties to respect the rule of law, as well as to remain calm and refrain from inflaming political tensions”, in a statement issued today.

The self-coup announced by Pedro Castillo yesterday morning had a very short run: hours after doing so, Congress dismissed him and he was immediately arrested by the Peruvian Police.

Castillo has already been transferred to the Barbadillo prisonwhere former president Alberto Fujimori is being held, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence.

The one who was vice president of CastleDina Boluarte, has temporarily assumed the head of state after being sworn in before Congress, thus becoming the first female president of the country.
