Alert in Bogotá: the number of deaths due to the consumption of adulterated liquor increases to 16

Between November 24 and December 7, 2022, 16 deaths have occurred in the city due to poisoning from the consumption of alcoholic beverages that are obtained through artisanal distillation or preparations with industrial alcohol. In total, 28 people have been intoxicated by the consumption of this type of beverage, of which 12 had samples of methanol in their bodies.

Given the increase in cases of poisoning due to the consumption of adulterated liquor, the District Administration reinforced inspection, surveillance, control and prevention operations in public establishments to face the risk that is presented to health and the life of the inhabitants of Bogota for said consumption.

In order to face this situation, the articulated work between different entities of the District, such as the Secretariats of Health, Government, Security and Social Integration, has been strengthened. In this teamwork, which has had the support of the National Police and Invima, andBetween November 25 and December 7, 131 operations have been carried out inspection, surveillance and control of high-impact bars in the 20 locations of the city.

As a result of this joint intervention, 28 establishments have been closed; In addition, 59 operations to verify healthy and safe food and beverages have been carried out, in which 202 establishments were intervened.

The District Administration calls on citizens to follow the recommendations when purchasing alcoholic beverages, verifying that the point of purchase is a legal and authorized business; besides, to what refrain from purchasing this type of product on the street.

Citizens are also asked to inform the authorities, through Line 123 or the local hospital, the place where it is identified that this type of beverage is being sold or handled.
