Putin opens the door to adopting the doctrine of pre-emptive strikes

The Russian President, Vladimir Putinsaid on Friday that his country was considering modifying its military doctrine to include the possibility of carrying out preemptive strikes to disarm an enemy.

The Kremlin leader was responding to a reporter’s question about some of his statements this week in which he warned that the risk of nuclear war was increasing, but that Russia would not attack first.

In his reply, Putin said that Moscow was considering adopting what the United States calls a preemptive strike.

“First of all, the United States has the concept of a preemptive strike. Second, it is developing a system of disarming strikes,” Putin told reporters in Kyrgyzstan.

The Russian president assured that his country needed to think about adopting these “ideas (Americans) to guarantee its own security.” “We’re just thinking about this,” he added.

“If a potential adversary believes that it is possible to use the concept of preemptive attack but we don’t, then this makes us think about the threats that these ideas pose to us,” he explained.

Putin defended that Russian cruise missiles and hypersonic weapon systems were “more modern and even more efficient” than American ones.

On Wednesday, the Kremlin leader warned of an increase in nuclear tensions, but insisted that Moscow would not be the first to use such weapons.

That same day, the US State Department retorted that “any vague talk about nuclear weapons is utterly irresponsible.”

Out of the public imagination for decades, the specter of nuclear war has returned since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February and Putin’s veiled threats to resort to atomic weapons.
