Petro assured that “Today there is a crisis” in the neighboring country, where there are “a popularly elected president imprisoned”, what he described as “outburst”.

This crisis also “It is altering the schedule of the integration process that we brought” Well, as he remarked, the difficulties that the Peruvian Congress had been making for Castillo to travel to Latin American meetings “What was preventing was the articulation, the economic integration of Latin America and the Andean area.”

When asked if he recognizes Boluarte as president, Petro avoided answering and pointed out that he has not yet spoken with the new government, all this after the Colombian Foreign Ministry released a joint statement with Mexico, Argentina and Bolivia on Monday, assuring that Castillo, whom they still recognize as president, is “victim of undemocratic harassment.”

Castillo’s removal last week after he decided to dissolve Congress in what many have seen as a coup attempt, and his subsequent arrest, has unleashed a deep crisis in Peru.

The protests in support of Castillo, who will serve 18 months in pretrial detention while being investigated for the crimes of rebellion and conspiracy for the failed self-coup, have been taking place since last Sunday, with a strong military presence that has left 20 dead in the country.

“I hope that they stop killing, there are close to 20 deaths,” Petro lamented today, once again advocating dialogue.
