Iran has been rocked by protests since the death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl, after being arrested in Tehran by the morality police, who accused her of violating the strict dress code that it is imposed in particular on women who wear the veil in public.

“Four clerics were injured by unidentified persons using a sharp object in Qom,” a Shiite holy city south of Tehran, Irna announced, without specifying the exact circumstances of the incident on Sunday.

The city of Qom is home to several seminaries and study centers for Shi’ism, Iran’s state religion since the 16th century.

The agency specified that two of the elderly religious were taken to the hospital and released quickly while the other two were treated on the spot.

Since mid-September, thousands of Iranians and about 40 foreigners have been detained and more than 2,000 people charged in connection with the protests, according to judicial authorities. Two 23-year-old men were hanged.
