AMLO regrets that the “highly questioned” government of Peru has not called elections “as soon as possible”

The political crisis in Peru and the diplomatic tension, generated as a result of the constant declarations of the Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) in this regard, they returned to star in the already traditional morning press conference offered daily from the National Palace.

In this new Morning, AMLO regretted that it was not decided to advance the elections “as soon as possible” in order to solve the crisis. This Tuesday, the Congress of the Republic approved advancing the general elections, scheduled for 2026, to April 2024 in response to social protests.

“We regret the decision of the Government of Peru, a government highly questioned as a whole for its behavior. Above all for opting for repression and not seeking a way out through dialogue, with the democratic method of calling elections as soon as possible to avoid a situation of political instability that, as we have said many times, fundamentally affects the brotherly people. of Peru”, commented AMLO.

The president also stressed that the tensions in recent days have been between the two governments and should not affect relations between the citizens of both countries.

We know how to distinguish very well between the brother people of Peru and the so-called political class, of the economic and political power groups of Peru, who are the ones who have maintained this crisis in that country because of their personal ambitions, because of their economic interests. It is a country with a brotherly people that for many years, at least 6 years, have had five presidents, imagine this situation,” he told the press.

And it is fundamentally due to the interests of a group that dominates and does not allow the Peruvian people, especially those who live in the mountains, to participate in public life and exercise their political rights. and there is a true democracy. It is an elite, a bit of what happened here, nothing more than pretended here, there was more simulation, “added the president.

AMLO assured that his country experienced an “oligarchy” between 1983 and 2018, a period during which “plundered Mexico” much more than “in the three centuries of colony”.

“This is what is happening in Peru, the people seek to free themselves from that oppression, from those oligarchies, they participate through elections; However, to those oligarchies, supported by vested interest groups, the powerful of those countries -as was the case in Mexico-, the information media, almost all of them at the service of that regime of looting, corruption and injustices, makes it very difficult for governments that emerged from popular democratic processes to govern“, he pointed.

Subsequently, the Mexican president recapitulated Castillo’s turbulent months in power and his constant confrontations with the Congress of the Republic, noting that “in a year and a half, three trials in Congress to remove him (were presented), the last one arguing incapacity moral. Although it may seem incredible, the precept exists as grounds for removing the president. Because all these laws were made in the neoliberal period that we suffered and that was suffered throughout Latin America and in the world. Everything to have control”.

During his address, however, AMLO made no reference to former President Castillo’s announcement to temporarily dissolve Congress and establish an exceptional emergency government during a message to the Nation made on December 7, prior to a parliamentary hearing where a vacancy motion against him would be debated, which led to his dismissal.

In his conference, the Mexican president also regretted the reaction of the United States government to the protests in Peru and questioned that the government of Dina Boluarte has not responded to the opinions of the ambassador, Lisa Kenna, as with the Mexican representative, Pablo Monroywho was declared a person non grata on Tuesday and ordered to leave the country within the next 72 hours.

“They did not react the same with the representatives of the United States. The US ambassador intervened directly, she went to the Palace to see the president appointed by Congress and we only make known, in this morning, our position. We will always defend the right of asylum, it is part of our foreign policy”, assured AMLO.

“In the case of Peru, the majority of Congress was against the president who is in custody. There is no evidence that he committed a crime. There is no opinion that shows that he has moral incapacity. So, an imposition is carried out, people are dissatisfied because they do not respect the popular will and I, the truth, I am very sorry that the US government, which always talks about democracy, in this case instead of asking that the will of the people be respected, that the president-elect be respected democratically, endorses all the truculent maneuver to remove the President. So, how do we say it, we are non welcome”, he later commented.

Finally, AMLO brandished the supposed way out of the widespread political crisis that Peru has suffered during the last decade.

“I hope those at the top come to their senses, those who made their rinses above, of all the parties moved by ambition for power, not thinking about the people, not thinking about the well-being of the people. Hopefully they come to their senses and find a way out of this tremendous political crisis that comes from afar. Presidents in jail, presidents on the run, a president who committed suicide. They do not understand that there is a deep crisis and how to get out of such a situation, there is only the democratic method. Why call elections? First, the lady they name (in reference to Dina Boluarte) says that she will govern until 2026, in the midst of a crisis. Now the haggling begins that we call elections in 2024. Why don’t they call general elections immediately to elect Congress, the new president, and that while the Constitution must contemplate that there are authorities that call elections. An interim president for that purpose. I am sure that in this way people will wait and, in a rational, democratic way, they will face the conflict. Wanting to impose authorities by force, using the Army, that unfortunately will generate more suffering, instability”, he analyzed.
