US sanctions Iran’s attorney general for crackdown on protests

USA sanctioned this Wednesday the attorney general of IranMohamad Jafar Montazeri, and four other senior Iranian officials for human rights violations in the repression of the protests that are shaking the country.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, announced these sanctions in a statement in which he denounced that the Iranian government has used “repressive measures” and “ruthless” against the “peaceful protesters”, who have been protesting since the death of the young Masha Amini. in September.

According to the note sent by the Treasury Department, the US sanctioned the attorney general for being “responsible or complicit” in “ordering, controlling or directing” human rights violations against Iranian citizens since June 2009, regardless of whether whether they were produced in Iran or not.

In addition to the attorney general, those sanctioned are the senior officials of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Moslem Moein, Hassan Hassanzadeh, Seyed Sadegh Hosseini and Hossein Maroufi; in addition to the company Imen Sanat Zaman Fara, manufacturer of materials used by law enforcement.

As a result of today’s action, all sanctioned property and assets in the US are blocked and Americans are prohibited from transacting with them.

Iran is experiencing a wave of protests over the death of Masha Amini, the young woman who died in police custody after being arrested for wearing the Islamic headscarf incorrectly. Tehran has responded to the demonstrations with arbitrary arrests, trials and even executions of the participants.
