Russia expels Lithuanian diplomat in response to similar Vilnius move

The Foreign Ministry of Russia announced this Wednesday the expulsion of a diplomat from the Embassy of Lithuaniain response to an identical measure previously approved by Vilnius.

“On December 28, the Lithuanian charge d’affaires in Russia, Jurgita Cibulskiene, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and was conveyed the strong condemnation of the Russian side for the unfounded expulsion of an employee of the Russian Embassy in Vilnius on December 1 December,” says the official note.

In response, Moscow ordered a Lithuanian diplomat to leave the country within five days.

Vilnius declared a Russian diplomat “persona non grata” on December 1 for “activities incompatible with his status”, to which Moscow promised to respond.

At the beginning of October, Lithuania declared the Russian charge d’affaires “unpleasant” considering some of his statements as “interference in the internal affairs” of the Baltic country.
