Dominican Republic: three deaths and 31 affected in road operations by the end of the year

Three people died and 31 were affected by traffic accidents in the first 21 hours of the second phase of the road safety operation carried out by the relief authorities of Dominican Republic on the occasion of the New Years Eve and the New Year in the country.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) reported this Saturday in its first bulletin of the operation “Awareness for Life, Christmas and New Year 2022-2023”, that there have been 31 traffic accidents and that 22 people have required medical assistance for alcoholic intoxication and another 8 for ingestion excess of food

The agency specified that two of the deceased were on motorcycles and that the third was inside a light vehicle.

Most of the accidents reported since 2:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT yesterday), when the operation began, have occurred in the National District, Puerto Plata and Montecristi (north) and Monseñor Nouel, a province located about 90 kilometers north of the capital.

Motorcycles were involved in 21 of the 31 reported highway accidents, the COE said in a document.

The body, which brings together dozens of central and decentralized government institutions, including the Civil Defense and the Fire Department, said that 329 health assistance and 1,730 vials have been offered.

The operation was announced to conclude tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. GMT), but hours later the Dominican President, Luis Abinader, ordered that next Monday be a holiday so that Dominicans “enjoy a well-deserved holiday” from New Year.

The Emergency Operations Center has not ruled on the matter.

The first phase of the special operation, carried out between December 23 and 26, concluded with the death of 18 people in 102 traffic accidents, while 368 people were intoxicated by alcohol, 18 of them minors between the ages of 12 and 17. , and 101 people were treated for food poisoning.
