Biden nominates a new ambassador to Peru in the midst of the Castillo crisis

The president of United States, Joe Bidennominated this Tuesday the career diplomat Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath as a new ambassador to Perua country that is going through a severe crisis due to the attempted coup and subsequent removal of the now ex-president Pedro Castillo.

If ratified by the Senate, Syptak-Ramnath will replace the ambassador in office Lisa Kennawho has been critical of Castillo’s actions and has shown his support for the new Government of Dina Boluarte.

Biden’s nominee currently serves as “number two” at the United States Embassy in Mexico and has previously worked at the US legations in Singapore, Mali, Tunisia and the United Nations (New York), the White House detailed in a statement.

Fluent in Spanish and French, she is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, and has been awarded several State Department awards.

Before joining the diplomatic corps, he worked for the US Navy.

The new ambassador will have to deal with the political crisis in Peru that erupted on December 7 when Castillo was dismissed by Congress after trying to dissolve Parliament, establish an emergency Executive, govern by decree, convene a constituent assembly and reorganize the system of Justice.

In her place, the until then vice-president, Dina Boluartewho opposed Castillo’s plan and against whom protests have been unleashed in various parts of the country, which have left at least 28 dead.

The protests demand the dismissal of Boluarte and the government that she calls “transition”, the closure of Congress, the electoral advance and the convocation of a constituent assembly.
