Republican hardliners on Tuesday blocked the party’s nominee Kevin McCarthy from presiding over the House of Representatives, the lower house of Congress.

McCarthy needs 218 votes in the House, something that supposedly should be easy to achieve with a 222-seat majority after the November midterm elections. But 19 Republicans, including supporters of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), voted against him in the first two rounds and 20 in the third.

This Wednesday Trump asked them to support McCarthy when voting resumes at noon (Washington DC time).
