Institutions attacked in Brazil: 100 supporters of Jair Bolsonaro arrested

At least 150 supporters of far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro have been arrested after breaking into and raiding Brazil’s main places of power on Sunday in Brasilia, according to several media reports.

Footage from CNN Brazil showed the Bolsonarians, dressed in yellow and green, descending in single file, with their hands behind their backs, down the ramp of the Planalto presidential palace, surrounded by police. In other pictures, we see a bus full of detained demonstrators leaving towards the police station.

Senate police said they arrested 30 people in the Chamber, one of the seats of power stormed by the Bolesonarists, as well as in the neighboring Chamber of Deputies, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court.

As night fell in the Brazilian capital, law enforcement seemed to gradually regain control of the situation, water cannons held back the protesters, although dozens of protesters remained in place, and the situation remained confused.
