The prosecution said in a statement that it had “ordered the detention of three defendants for four days pending investigation” and accuses them of “attempting to steal a pharaonic statue” in the ancient city of Aswan, on the banks of the Nile, 675 km south of Cairo.
According to the statement, police said that “three people were detained in possession of hand digging tools and heavy equipment, a crane” which they used to try to “lift the statue and excavate the region’s antiquities.”
The Aswan Antiquities Authority “attributed (the statue) to Ramesses II, weighing about 10 tons,” the statement added.
The prosecution ordered the police to “promptly investigate other people involved with the crime suspects.”
Ramesses II, one of the most celebrated pharaohs of the 19th Dynasty, reigned for 67 years and was known throughout Egypt as a great warrior and prolific temple builder.
In the past decade, the country has recovered 29,000 antiquities that were smuggled abroad.
